Waves have caused an estimated $7.6 million in erosion damage in Barrow, Alaska, and officials said they are concerned that wind-driven pack ice could pile onto shore and crush houses in the Arctic Ocean community. The ice is still about 150 miles offshore, farther than usual at this time of year. But the expanse of open water, which spawned high waves that washed away roads and undermined houses during the weekend, could become a speedway for giant, crushing blocks of ice.
