The Nation : House OKs Education Bill
On a vote of 385 to 25, the House passed a compromise higher education bill that tightens the requirements for financial aid while extending the help to part-time, non-traditional students. The bill, expected to win Senate approval, authorizes $10.2 billion in loans, grants and other aid programs for fiscal 1987. The measure provides $10 million for child-care services for disadvantaged students. It requires that, in order to remain eligible for student aid, a student must maintain a “C” average by the end of the second year or be in good academic standing.
