A federal judge in Atlanta barred the Douglas County school system from having invocations before high school football games in the county after William Jager of Douglasville and his 18-year-old son, Douglas Jager, filed the suit against Douglas County High School last Friday.

The elder Jager said he was surprised at the outcome because of “the way the community is. The prayers are being controlled by Southern Protestants, and have been since the beginning. How could you have freedom of religion when there’s only one group doing it? It’s a joke.”

U.S. District Judge Ernest Tidwell said the school system’s 50-year-old practice of sponsoring invocations before home football games at Douglas County High School “has no secular purpose.”
