State Sen. H. L. Richardson (R-Glendora) retracted an earlier allegation that rulings by the state Supreme Court under Chief Justice Rose Elizabeth Bird had made 15 condemned killers eligible for parole. The retraction follows news stories that said the sentences of the 15 were reduced from death to life but as a result of court rulings during the tenure of Chief Justice Donald Wright who preceded Bird. Richardson’s Law and Order Campaign Committee had attributed the reductions to the Bird court in a leaflet encouraging people to vote against Bird and Justices Joseph Grodin and Cruz Reynoso in November.
