Costa Rica closed an abandoned airstrip near its northwestern border with Nicaragua, citing fears that it would be used by narcotics traffickers or anti-Sandinista rebels fighting the government of Nicaragua. The 1-mile-long gravel airstrip was seized by Costa Rican police Sept. 1 after residents in the area reported hearing the sound of airplanes using the field. The airstrip was built by a Panama-based firm for a tourism and reforestation project, but the firm later postponed its plans.
