France said it is sending troops and air support to Togo, where gunfire broke out again after the pro-Western government reported crushing a coup attempt. The French Defense Ministry said it was responding to a request for aid from the Togolese president, Gen. Gnassingbe Eyadema, who led army and police forces in battling several dozen commandos who attacked his residence in Lome, the capital. No details were available on how many French troops and aircraft will be sent to Togo.
