Asian Games Roundup : Hong Kong Gets Its First Gold; Fujiwara Picks Up His Fourth

Woman bowler Che Kuk Hung won Hong Kong’s first gold medal in Asian Games history, and Japanese swimmer Katsunori Fujiwara raced to his fourth victory of the 1986 event, while China padded its overall lead Friday.

Che rolled a final game of 203 for a six-game total of 1,165, beating Thailand’s Wannasiri Duangdee by 13 pins for the women’s singles gold medal.

The Hong Kong delegation gave a stamping and roaring ovation as Che received her medal.

The swimming competition ended with 28 Games records in 29 events. The Japanese won 17 races, including three Friday.

Fujiwara became the Games’ third quadruple gold medalist, anchoring Japan’s 400-meter medley relay team to a Games record time of 3 minutes 46.55 seconds. The previous record was 3:56.48.

The other quadruple gold medalists were Chinese gymnast Li Ning and Chinese shooter Xu Haifeng.

With eight days left in the 16-day Games, the Chinese had 53 golds, 36 silvers and 26 bronzes.

Japan, with 5 golds Friday, had 26 golds, 33 silvers and 34 bronzes. South Korea won 3 golds, for a total of 18, along with 21 silvers and 24 bronzes.
