No Jail for Death Pact Survivor
A 63-year-old stroke victim who failed to take his own life in a death pact with his ailing wife was sentenced today to three years probation and no jail time for aiding and abetting her suicide.
The virtually paralyzed, nearly mute Jay McFadden had pleaded guilty Sept. 18 to aiding and abetting after a charge of murdering his wife, Gladys, a victim of multiple sclerosis, was dismissed. This morning, Superior Court Judge Luis A. Cardenas ordered McFadden to see a probation officer monthly for the first year of formal probation but said the last two years of probation would be informal, meaning McFadden would not need to report.
