“The Manchurian Candidate.” Listen for Pleasure. Actor Robert Vaughn reads this chilling but mesmerizing horror thriller by Richard Condon, about an American soldier who is brainwashed by the Chinese to become their perfect assassin. Director John Frankenheimer made Condon’s book into a highly successful 1962 movie starring Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey and Angela Lansbury, but this abridgement does slipshod service to the book and Vaughn’s portrayal of the characters is a big disappointment.
