Giant icebergs were breaking off of the Alaskan glacier that turned a saltwater fiord into a growing freshwater lake and scientists believed the icy dam could burst, releasing all the trapped marine animals that were the target of an earlier rescue effort. An outburst at the glacial dam near Yakutat was imminent, and a five-mile area along either side of the dam was ordered cleared, said a scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey. There reportedly was no danger to nearby communities.
