Canada’s Progressive Conservative government barely managed a split in two by-elections in the first test of voter reaction at the midpoint of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney’s mandate. The Conservative candidate was narrowly reelected in the Alberta district of Pembina, held by the party since 1972. In the Quebec district of St. Maurice, the Liberals easily retained their seat, limiting the Conservative candidate to only 20% of the vote. The outcome does not affect the huge Conservative majority in the 282-seat House of Commons. Standings after the by-elections were Conservatives 212, Liberals 40 and New Democrats 30.
