Botswana celebrated 20 years of independence at a ceremony attended by President Reagan’s daughter Maureen, President Samora M. Machel of Mozambique, former Tanzanian President Julius K. Nyerere and other dignitaries. The African leaders also conferred on the issue of economic sanctions against South Africa, which Botswana does not support because the landlocked nation depends heavily on its neighbor for trade and transportation. The United States is giving $8 million in aid this year to Botswana, which has been plagued recently by drought and locusts.
