Legislation to permanently extend a work-incentive program for disabled Supplemental Security Income recipients was approved by the House. Begun in 1981 and due to expire in June, the program would become a permanent fixture of the SSI program under the bill that was approved on a voice vote. Since 1981, 55,000 physically and mentally disabled people have participated in the program that allows recipients to continue getting Medicaid and reduced SSI benefits after they begin working.
