China Marks 37th Anniversary With Party, Song, Dance

More than 1 million people converged on Peking’s main square Wednesday, and Communist Party and government leaders gave a party for 20,000 guests as part of festivities marking the 37th anniversary of the Communist state.

During the party in the Great Hall of the People, a navy art rtroupe performed songs and dances, guests played Chinese chess, bridge and electronic games, and acrobats performed, the official New China News Agency reported.

Large portraits of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Vladimir Lenin and Sun Yat-sen, founder of the revolutionary movement that overthrew the last Chinese emperor in 1911, were erected in Tian An Men Square.

A portrait of Mao Tse-tung, who led the Communist Party to victory in a civil war against the Nationalists in 1949, hung as usual on Tian An Men, the Gate of Heavenly Peace.
