Methanol in Liquor Kills 20 in China

PEKING —
Twenty people died and about 1,000 became sick in southern China after drinking liquor contaminated with methanol, the official New China News Agency reported Wednesday.
The agency said six people were arrested for selling tainted liquor to merchants in the city of Guiyang. Police seized 2,000 quarts of tainted liquor and 675 quarts of industrial alcohol, which has a methanol base, the agency said.
Methanol, or methyl alcohol, is added to liquor to cut production costs and make the product stronger.
