China Ties Asian Games Record of 77 Gold Medals

China won its record-tying 77th gold medal Wednesday in the 10th Asian Games, while Japan, led by victorious women’s marathoner Eriko Asai, earned six golds in track and field.

China got its 77th gold, tying the record set by Japan in 1966, when Wang Xiuting won the women’s 10,000 meters in 32:47.77.

The Chinese, who lead the medal standings, also have 68 silver medals and 37 bronze for a total of 182, with four days remaining. South Korea is second in golds with 57 and has 44 silver and 61 bronze for a total of 162, while Japan is third in golds with 52 but second in overall medals with 169, including 59 silver and 58 bronze.

In track, India’s P.T. Usha earned her second gold, winning the women’s 200 meters in a Games-record 23.68 seconds.
