Egypt’s ruling party won an overwhelming victory in a mid-term election, but three boycotting opposition parties labeled the voting a farce. Interior Minister Zaki Badr said that despite the boycott, nearly 82% of Egypt’s 13.6 million voters cast their ballots Wednesday for the Shura Council, a parliamentary consultative group. President Hosni Mubarak’s National Democratic Party won 97% of the 11.2 million votes cast. Three of the five legal opposition parties that boycotted the election accused the government of forging ballots.
