Torrential rains drenched the Midwest today, sending an Oklahoma river swirling through 100 homes and covering Chicago area roads with up to a foot of water that left dozens of cars stalled in snarled rush-hour traffic.

Storms stuck over the nation’s midsection brought up to seven inches of rain overnight to sections of western Oklahoma already soaked by 15 inches this week. Thunderstorms and flood watches and warnings stretched today from central Texas to the northern suburbs of Chicago.

A continuous morning downpour covered Chicago expressways with water. Flooding closed exits along four miles of the Kennedy Expressway on Chicago’s North Side and dozens of stalled cars blocked exit ramps and roadways.
