Judge Denies USFL Motion for New Trial

U.S. District Judge Peter K. Leisure denied the United States Football League’s motion for a new trial Thursday, as well as the National Football League’s request to set aside a jury’s finding that the older league is a monopoly.

“Having carefully considered all issues raised by counsels’ extensive submissions, I have concluded that there is no justification for disturbing any of the jury’s verdicts in this case,” Judge Leisure wrote in a 44-page opinion.

After nearly three months of trial, which ended July 29, a five-woman, one-man jury found the NFL is a monopoly but awarded the USFL only $3 in triple damages, rather than the $1.69 billion the USFL requested.
