Eastern filbert blight, a potentially devastating fungus disease, has been found near Damascus, Ore., and threatens the state’s entire $16-million filbert industry. There is no known cure, and infected trees must be destroyed. State officials are expected to put a quarantine into effect after determining the extent of the infested area in Clackamas County. All nuts harvested in the region will be fumigated in hopes that the disease will not spread to other counties that produce the nuts, a state agriculture official said.
