Representatives of 40,000 Boeing Co. machinists and negotiators for the aircraft maker met in Seattle with a federal mediator and agreed to continue bargaining and try to avoid a strike. After the 90-minute session, the mediator said the talks would reconvene today. Union officials said employees were remaining on the job although they voted last week to reject Boeing’s current contract offer and to reaffirm a strike authorization.
