3rd Bungled Suicide Pact: Fiancee Dies, Man Lives--in Jail

ZURICH, Switzerland — A Zurich court today sentenced a 34-year-old man to 2 1/2 years in jail for strangling his fiancee to death in their third bungled suicide pact.
The court heard that the two resolved to kill themselves in April, 1982, because the man feared his employers were about to discover he had been embezzling money.
After an overdose of tranquilizers failed to kill them, the unhappy couple tried without success to slit their wrists.
The 24-year-old woman then pleaded with her fiance to strangle her, which he did with his bare hands before jumping out of a second-floor window in a final unsuccessful bid to end his own life.
The defendant, described by the judges as “selfish, unfeeling and cruel,” was also convicted of defrauding his employer.
