Fifteen veterans turned in their military medals at a rally in San Francisco in support of four other veterans who are staging a fast to dramatize their opposition to U.S. policy in Central America. The rally at the federal building came five weeks after veterans George Mizo and former military chaplain Charles Liteky began their fast in Washington, D.C. Liteky--who gave up the Medal of Honor he won in Vietnam to protest Central American policies of the Reagan Administration--and Mizo were joined in the fast by two other veterans two weeks later. Barbara Graves, who won a Bronze Star as a civilian during World War II, said she will carry the medals to Washington, where Mizo, Liteky and the others will place them on the Vietnam Memorial in ceremonies set for Thursday.
