Shipping companies shut port facilities on Canada’s West Coast, locking out 3,700 longshoremen in an attempt to gain contract concessions on the unloading of container cargoes. The lockout closed the ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, which handle almost half of Canada’s annual grain exports, valued at about $3 billion. The shutdown was the second major blow to Canadian grain farmers in a month. A four-week strike in Ontario paralyzed eastern grain shipments until the past weekend, when a settlement was reached.
