Iraq said it sent waves of warplanes to strike industrial and oil targets in southwestern Iran. A statement by the military command said that three oil and gas installations and a sugar plant in Iran were hit in one raid, while other planes struck at Iran’s Kharg Island oil terminal on the Persian Gulf. Iran acknowledged Iraqi bombing of industrial targets in the region, and Tehran’s official news agency reported that two Iraqi jets were shot down over Kharg. Earlier, an Iraqi bomber was shot down over the southern sector of the 730-mile-long battlefront, the agency added.
