The Soviet Union wants India to help teach its cosmonauts the ancient Hindu art of yoga to prevent space sickness, the head of India’s Institute of Aviation medicine said Monday.

Air Commodore P.C. Chatterjee told reporters in Bangalore that the two countries will also study how yoga can help cosmonauts cope with weightlessness.

He said that experiments by India’s first cosmonaut, Rakesh Sharma, who flew on a Soviet mission in 1984, had shown that yoga exercises were beneficial. Yoga in its simplest form teaches breath and muscle control.
