Fluor Corp. said that the Chicago division of its Fluor Engineers Inc. subsidiary has received a contract from Amoco in Chicago to perform additional modification work at its oil refinery in Whiting, Ind.

Ray Kopetz, a spokesman for Fluor’s Chicago office, said the new contract calls for the engineering company to modify a refinery unit that converts heavy crude oil into a lighter grade of oil. The project will involve about 60 employees from the Chicago division who will perform engineering, design and procurement services. The unit should be completed sometime in the middle of next year, he said.

Kopetz said the contract is part of an ongoing program to modernize the entire refinery. He said Fluor has been involved in the project since 1984.

The Irvine-based engineering and natural resources company did not release the value of the Amoco contract, but Kopetz said Fluor’s stake in the entire project is valued at about $10 million, with the new contract accounting for “the lion’s share” of that amount.
