Owens-Illinois Inc. of Toledo, Ohio, said net earnings for the third quarter of 1986 increased 19% and nine-month earnings were up 26% over the comparable 1985 periods. Robert J. Lanigan, chairman and chief executive officer, said results of the company’s base businesses continue to improve as a result of lower costs, higher capacity utilization, and improving prices in its forest-products operations. In the third quarter of 1986, O-I had net earnings of $57.2 million and sales of $911.2 million. In the comparable period last year, O-I had net earnings of $48.2 million and sales of $971 million. For the first nine months of 1986, O-I reported net earnings of $144.1 million and sales of $2.74 billion, compared to 1985 nine month net earnings of $114.8 million or $1.92 a common share and sales of $2.78 billion. “We anticipate that our glass container plants will continue to run at high operating rates for the foreseeable future. The forest-products business also is strong, with improved price levels for corrugated boxes. Most of our other business segments also performed well,” he said.
