A $24-million research project to develop an airborne wind shear detection system will be undertaken by NASA and the Federal Aviation Administration, Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Hanford Dole said. Various technologies will be studied aimed at building a system that can forecast wind shear conditions to allow pilots to take necessary precautions. Low-level wind shear alert systems have been installed at 90 airports and the FAA said it will install 20 more within a year. And, the FAA said it plans to install the first 16 Doppler weather radar systems to detect wind shear and microburst in airport terminal areas beginning in 1989.
