A toxic red tide that has killed hundreds of thousands of fish along 150 miles of the Texas coast drifted into Corpus Christi and along the upper reaches of Padre Island in what was described as the heaviest concentrations yet. Officials at the University of Texas Marine Science Center in Port Aransas warned fishermen to avoid areas where fish are dead or dying. The organisms form toxins, which cause burning eyes, breathing difficulties, tingling or numbness of the mouth and extremities, and irritation of nose, throat and lungs. But officials said no one has been treated for symptoms of red tide, which first appeared in a heavily populated Texas area in late August.
