W. German Leader to Visit Hungary
West German President Richard von Weizsaecker will fly to Budapest on Monday for the first visit to Hungary by a West German head of state.
Von Weizsaecker says he hopes the four-day state visit, his first to a Warsaw Pact country, will strengthen the already good relations between the two countries. West Germany is Hungary’s largest Western trading partner.
The West German president, who will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, is scheduled to hold talks with Hungarian Communist Party leader Janos Kadar as well as other senior politicians and churchmen.
Von Weizsaecker, invited by Hungary in January, is only the third West German president to visit a Warsaw Pact country. Walter Scheel visited the Soviet Union in 1975 and Karl Carstens went to Romania in 1981.
