‘Donors Need Safeguards’

Share

Your editorial ‘Charity Donors Need Safeguards’ (Sept. 28) was outstanding. As an all - volunteer organization started only last February with our first goal to raise money to produce and distribute an educational video for the elementary school children of this nation, we have been shocked to see how many “nonprofit” organizations are functioning that appear to spend a great deal of their donated money on paid staff.

We now know that with all volunteers the job can be done, however, it takes a great deal of work, love and personal time.

Supervisors Thomas F. Riley and Harriett M. Wieder are looking into better ways to distinguish legitimate fund drives from those designed to deceive and are asking that the charities disclose administrative costs so the public will know where their money is going.

That is the first step in creating county standards to make the public aware.

The Search Foundation would like to take step two by offering to be the first charity to submit our complete financial records audited by Price Waterhouse.
