Streets in cities throughout Israel were deserted and synagogues overflowed with worshipers as Jews marked Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year, by fasting and praying for forgiveness for their sins. The Day of Atonement, which ends at sundown today, brought all business to a standstill. Radio and television stations went off the air, all public transportation was halted and roads were deserted except for an occasional ambulance or police car. Ben-Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, Israel’s only international airport, was also closed.
