Greece’s conservative main opposition New Democracy Party held big leads over the ruling Panhellenic Socialist Movement in early returns from nationwide municipal elections, state-run television reported. New Democracy was reported between 15 and 20 percentage points ahead of Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou’s party in the three main cities of Athens, Salonika and Piraeus. The elections were expected to deliver a verdict on the Papandreou government’s popularity and its austerity program.
