West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl’s Christian Democrats overwhelmingly defeated the opposition Social Democrats in a Bavarian state legislative election. Karl-Heinz Hiersemann’s Social Democrats conceded defeat on the basis of a television computer projection giving state Premier Franz Josef Strauss’ Christian Social Union--the Bavarian sister party of the Christian Democrats--126 seats in the state legislature and 55.7% of the vote.
