History Lesson

This is in reference to the news brief (Oct. 3) covering the left wing of Britain’s Labor Party and the demands that Britain pull out of North Atlantic Treaty Organization, close all U.S. military bases there, have unilateral nuclear disarmament, and participation in U.S. missile defense program, etc.

How soon they forget! The mistakes in judgment by Labor’s own Ramsay Macdonald, by Conservative Stanley Baldwin in his third term as prime minister in the mid ‘30s, and by Conservative Neville Chamberlain in the late ‘30s with his policy of appeasement toward Nazi Germany and the disastrous Munich Agreement of 1938.

And these three men vehemently fought Winston Churchill and his warnings over the years that Britain had to increase greatly its defense capabilities in the light of the threat from a Germany that was “armed to the teeth” and flexing its military muscles.

Ignoring Churchill’s observations and recommendations did prove that Britain was somewhat of a “sitting duck” when the Germans inflicted such extensive damage and loss of lives with their air strikes. Why would anyone in his/her right mind want to subject lovely Britain to that same fate again (and more likely a much worse fate)?

Have not today’s Labor Party “lefties” learned anything from history? What makes them think that they can trust a leftist dictatorship any more than one to the far right. Incredibly naive!
