Lech Walesa and nine other prominent Poles urged President Reagan to lift the remaining U.S. economic sanctions imposed five years ago when Poland declared martial law. Economic assistance from the West is indispensable if Poland is to overcome its economic crisis, said a published statement the 10 signed. Walesa is the founder and former leader of the outlawed Solidarity trade union, which originally backed the sanctions. The group called on Reagan to restore Poland’s most-favored-nation trading status and its access to guaranteed financial credits.
