Imports of used tires have been halted by the Public Health Service because of the possible presence of the disease-carrying Asian tiger mosquito, federal officials said. Dr. Thomas Monath, a viral disease specialist at the national Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, said that the tiger mosquito breeds in water found in used tires that are kept outdoors. The mosquito is a carrier of the encephalitis virus, as well as yellow and dengue fever.
