Senators Complain, Tableau Is Withdrawn

WASHINGTON — A Vermont artist removed her exhibit from the rotunda of a Senate office building Thursday after several senators were reported to have complained that it was “too political” in protesting U.S. policy in Nicaragua.
Georgina Forbes of Thetford, Vt., who said she is a distant cousin of Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), refused for several hours to comply with a request by Senate authorities that she dismantle her tableau. She backed down late Thursday at Kerry’s suggestion.
The exhibit depicted the kitchen of a rural Nicaraguan family victimized by the U.S.-backed contra rebels who are seeking to overthrow the Sandinista government in that country.
