Society Seeks Singers Willing to Warble on the Weekend

Want to leave the privacy of your shower and sing in public?

Then join the South Coast Choral Society next weekend for a performance of Anton Bruckner’s “Te Deum.”

“We want people who want to sing,” said Ted Gardner, director of the choral group. “We don’t require experience, but someone who’s tone deaf might not have a good time.”

Anyone interested may come to a day-long workshop Saturday, starting at 10 a.m., at Ridgecrest School, 28915 Northbay Road. The performance will be Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the Norris Community Theatre, 27570 Crossfield Drive, Rolling Hills Estates. Admission to the concert, which will include other music performed by the chorale, is $7.

Gardner described the 25-minute Bruckner work as “grand, powerful and romantic . . . not difficult but challenging.”

And, he said, about six hours of rehearsal--five on Saturday and one before the Sunday performance--ought to be enough to meet the challenge.

Gardner said he has no idea how many people will be interested, but he has rented nearly 100 extra scores in case there’s a rush. “There are a lot of potential people, when you think of all the church singers,” he said.

Last year, when the chorale first invited the community to join in singing Mozart’s “Coronation Mass,” about 35 turned out. “It was a smashing success,” Gardner said.
