A blast of cold air swept down from Canada across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley and into the Northeast. As the cold moved east, temperatures dipped to the 20s and 30s from the Great Lakes to New England, with Alpena, Mich., reaching 21 degrees, which tied its record low temperature. Rain showers were scattered from Idaho across northeast Nevada, Utah and southwest Wyoming. In Missouri, two disaster aid centers for the victims of heavy flooding were opened in St. Charles County.
