The World : British Deport 55 Bengalis

Britain deported 55 Bengalis out of about 3,500 Asians who entered the country just before enactment of a visa requirement for people from the Indian subcontinent. A spokesman for the Home Office in London said the 55 were put on a flight for Bangladesh because, although they were entering Britain as tourists, investigators found that they intended to take up residence. The spokesman said that 270 other newcomers from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh were being held for processing. Visas will also be required of visitors from Ghana and Nigeria, beginning later this year.
