A bomb exploded outside a bakery in Christian East Beirut, injuring five people, police said. No one claimed responsibility for the mid-morning blast, which coincided with a wave of factional violence in East Beirut involving the supporters of Christian militia chief Samir Geagea, an ally of President Amin Gemayel, and his Syrian backed opponents led by ousted militia boss Elie Hobeika. The bombing, the 12th such incident in the capital’s Christian sector this year, brought the toll to 16 dead and more than 100 wounded.
