In a news conference via satellite from the bottom of the world today, scientists will report their early results of an investigation of an alarming “hole” in the atmospheric ozone layer above Antarctica. Scientists are concerned about the seasonal phenomenon because the thin blanket of ozone in the stratosphere is Earth’s primary barrier from dangerous amounts of ultraviolet radiation from the sun. The discovery was first reported last year by British Antarctic scientists who detected a 40% thinning of the ozone layer every fall.
