The Department of Energy deliberately distorted a scientific report to make two of its three proposed nuclear waste sites look better than was justified, two House subcommittee chairmen charged. Reps. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and Jim Weaver (D-Ore.), in a letter to John S. Herrington, secretary of Energy, said that their staffs discovered that department documents “reveal that DOE systematically deleted unfavorable information concerning the desirability of the Hanford, Wash., and the Deaf Smith County, Tex., sites.”
