The Archbishop of Canterbury, spiritual leader of the world’s 70 million Anglicans, today denied British press reports that his marriage has collapsed.

The Sun, a tabloid and Britain’s biggest-selling newspaper, and the Daily Star alleged today and Monday that the Most Rev. Robert Runcie’s marriage had become a “sham” and that there was pressure on him to resign.

“We have been a happily married couple for nearly 30 years and we both look forward to our rewarding partnership continuing for the rest of our lives,” Runcie and his wife, Rosalind, told the British Press Assn.

Church of England bishops today rallied around Runcie, slamming the reports as “baseless and offensive.”
