Education Secretary William J. Bennett announced that collections on unpaid student loans more than doubled in the last fiscal year. The Education Department collected more than $229 million in defaulted student loans in fiscal 1986. In fiscal 1985, $94 million in unpaid loans was collected by the department. The department said it is alerting 1.1 million debtors by mail to repay their loans or face the withholding of 1986 tax income refunds.
