Iranian artillery pounded a railroad station at Basra, Iraq’s second largest city, in retaliation for an Iraqi air attack on a freight train near the town of Andimeshk, about 275 miles southwest of Tehran, both countries reported. The shelling began after Tehran radio issued repeated warnings to the people of Basra to keep away from the station and evacuate nearby homes. Iran said its heavy artillery fired more than 200 rounds at the railroad station. Iraq said homes and other buildings were damaged by the bombardment.
