6 Americans Now Believed Held by Lebanese Captors

The reported abduction of writer Edward A. Tracy brings to six the number of Americans who are believed to be held by Lebanese kidnapers.

Eight Frenchmen, two Britons, an Italian, an Irishman and a South Korean are also held hostage there.

Altogether, 60 foreigners have been kidnaped in Lebanon since January, 1984. Thirty-four have been freed or have escaped, six have been confirmed killed and three are reported dead.

The missing Americans:

--Terry A. Anderson, 38, a native of Lorain, Ohio, chief Middle East correspondent for the Associated Press, kidnaped March 16, 1985. The Islamic Jihad terrorist group claimed responsibility.

--David P. Jacobsen, 55, of Huntington Beach, Calif., director of the American University Hospital, kidnaped May 28, 1985. Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility.

--Thomas Sutherland, 55, of Fort Collins, Colo., dean of agriculture at the American University of Beirut, kidnaped June 9, 1985. Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility.

--Joseph J. Cicippio, 56, of Valley Forge, Pa., acting comptroller at American University, kidnaped Sept. 12. Revolutionary Justice Organization claimed responsibility.

--Frank H. Reed, 53, of Malden, Mass., manager of a private school, kidnaped Sept. 9. A pro-Libyan group called the Arab Revolutionary Cells-Omar Moukhtar Forces claimed responsibility.

--Edward A. Tracy, 55, an illustrator and book salesman from Rutland, Vt. Date of his kidnaping is unclear, but Revolutionary Justice Organization claimed responsibility Tuesday.

Four other Americans are now free after being kidnaped:

--Father Lawrence M. Jenco, 51, of Joliet, Ill., a Roman Catholic priest, kidnaped Jan. 8, 1985. Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility. He was freed last July 26.

--Frank Regier, 50, professor of electrical engineering at American University, kidnaped Feb. 10, 1984, and freed by the Amal militia April 15, 1984. It was not known who held him, but they were believed to be radical Shias.

--Jeremy Levin, Beirut bureau chief of Cable News Network, kidnaped March 7, 1984. He escaped his captors Feb. 13, 1985.

--The Rev. Benjamin Weir, 61, a Presbyterian minister who had worked in Lebanon since 1953, kidnaped by Islamic Jihad on May 8, 1984, and released Sept. 14, 1985.

At least two Americans have been killed in captivity:

--William Buckley, 57, of Medford, Mass., U.S. Embassy political officer, kidnaped March 16, 1984. Responsibility claimed by Islamic Jihad, which reported executing him Oct. 4, 1985, in revenge for alleged U.S. complicity in Israel’s air raid on the Palestine Liberation Organization headquarters in Tunis. His body has never been found.

--Peter Kilburn, 61, of San Francisco. Librarian at the American University, he had been missing since Dec. 3, 1984. His body was found April 17, 1986.
