France Expels 1,700 Aliens

PARIS —
France has expelled more than 1,700 foreigners in the last six weeks as part of the right-wing government’s crackdown on illegal immigrants, Security Minister Robert Pandraud said today.
Pandraud, speaking in the National Assembly, dismissed criticism of the recent wave of expulsions from what he called a “choir of weeping women.” He defended the chartering of a special plane last week to fly 101 Malians back home.
